Roger Federer recently shared some of the reasons why he initially chose not to share behind-the-scenes footage of his retirement with the fans in an upcoming documentary.
Federer: Final Twelve Days premiered at the Tribeca Festival on June 10th and will be available worldwide on Prime Video on June 20th. The 100-minute film chronicles the Swiss legend's final moments before his official retirement from tennis.
A full trailer of the documentary, directed by Asif Kapadia and Joe Sabia, was released a week ago, and tennis fans were given a glimpse into Federer's family life. His wife, Mirka, and mother, Lynette, appear behind the cameras.
Throughout his career, Federer has always been a charismatic and outspoken figure within the tennis community, but he tends to shield his family from any public exposure.
Speaking to HELLO! during the premiere of his documentary, Federer revealed that he had a change of heart about sharing the most intimate moments of his private life with the fans in the 100-minute film.
"I've always been very giving and outgoing when it comes to press conferences, talking to the media, with the fans, all that stuff. Well, that's for the team (on footage of his private life). And that's for the family only to see. Not that I was hiding anything by any means. I wanted that to be for us."
Federer also explained why the never-before-seen video of his retirement was not meant for any future project when it was shot in 2022, the year he would bow out from the game. Instead, he only wanted it filmed so that his children could relate to the moment when they grew up.
"I was convinced early on that I should have some footage of the inner circle just for my life, just for the kids [to see] when they grow up, that they remember how it was, especially that very particular moment of my life."
