Alexander Zverev vs Thanasi Kokkinakis: 2024 Los Cabos Open - Preview & Prediction

by Zachary Wimer

Alexander Zverev is back on the courts and is looking really strong and he will face Thanasi Kokkinakis in his quarterfinal match at the 2024 Los Cabos Open.

We haven't seen Zverev play in a while, as his last match was the semifinal loss at the Australian Open, which was a big disappointment. The German was playing a really strong event and was looking rather competitive in the match against Daniil Medvedev, but, unfortunately for his fans, he lost the match in five sets.

He made his return at the Los Cabos Open recently, easily besting Yoshihito Nishioka and confirming once more that he's playing at a really high level right now. Mexican courts are not strange for him as he has won trophies in the country before, so this great start was hardly surprising.

When it comes to Kokkinakis, he pulled off a pretty big upset as well. Jack Draper is generally a player more people would pick to win their matchup than Kokkinakis, but the Australian pulled through in three sets. We'll see if he can back it up against Zverev.

Head-to-head:

They played three times so far, even though all of those matches were quite a while ago. The most recent match was played in 2022, and Zverev won that one in Miami comfortably 6-4, 6-4.

The only loss against Kokkinakis came at the 2018 Hopman Cup in three sets. Generally, Zverev has the upper hand because he is a bit more stable from the baseline. He is a wall when he plays well, and Kokkinakis doesn't really have the means to break it down easily.

Alexander Zverev Thanasi Kokkinakis
1 H2H 0
6 Rank 103
26 Age 27
9-2 2024 W/L 1-4
403-179 Career W/L 63-84

Prediction:

That's why I don't see much hope for Kokkinakis here. They're playing on a slower court, and Zverev should be able to grind out the win in two sets.

Prediction: Alexander Zverev to win in two sets.
