Coco Gauff handled herself really well during the match against Karolina Pliskova at the 2024 Dubai Championships and gave her thoughts after winning it.
Gauff secured a quarter-final in Dubai by beating Pliskova in three sets. It was a really tough match because she not only needed three sets but also needed to overcome a heated exchange with the umpire that lasted a few minutes.
It came after the umpire denied Gauff the chance to talk to the supervisor because she felt the umpire made a wrong decision. They talked about it for a while before the match resumed, and she shared her thoughts on it after the match.
"I think it just fueled me. I wanna watch back the video. I feel confident that it was after. It’s ok. It’s just one point. It happens in tennis. Players make mistakes. Everybody makes mistakes… It kind of went upward from there for me."
The moment went viral on social media, with many people backing the American and her claims. The most important thing for her was that she didn't allow it to distract her focus, and she was able to finish the match properly.
That's not always the case because sometimes Gauff can get frustrated with things, and it ends up costing her. This time around, she didn't, as she kept telling herself to remain calm.
"I was trying to tell myself to stay calm in the enxt point. Sometimes I get angry and go for too much so I was trying to not let that be the turning point of the set cause I think I was up a break at that point. I was just trying to stay calm with it."
The win is ultimately what matters most for Gauff, as she'll have a chance to secure a semi-final of the WTA 1000 tournament.
