Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas will meet in probably the most exciting third-round match at the 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters.
Both players needed different amounts of matches to get to the third round, something that wasn't the case in the past. In the Monte-Carlo Masters draw, the first eight seeded players have a bye, spots where both found themselves regularly.
That's not the case this year, as the Greek player has struggled a lot, even falling out of the Top 10, and that's why Zverev needed only one win to get to the third round, while in Tsitsipas' case, it was two wins that he needed.
However, it may be those two wins that may send the Greek player, and two-time champion at the event, past his German rival in this exciting matchup.
Head-to-head:
Both players have plenty of experience playing each other, meeting a total of 14 times on the ATP Tour. Out of those 14 matches, Tsitsipas won nine, and of the total number, five were played on clay, with the Greek winning four of those, with Zverev's only win coming in Madrid, where the court really suits his style.
It's clear he has an advantage both in this matchup and on a clay court, but his opponent has another advantage, and that's recent form, which is clearly on Zverev's side, as their ranking demonstrates.
Alexander Zverev | Stefanos Tsitsipas | |
---|---|---|
5 | H2H | 9 |
5 | Rank | 12 |
26 | Age | 25 |
19-6 | 2024 W/L | 13-6 |
413-183 | Career W/L | 313-149 |
Prediction:
Although Zverev had better form in recent weeks, and at any other event prior to this, he would likely be a favourite, in this match, the world no. 12 can have slight advantage.
That's because of his first two wins. He was leading 6-3, 3-2 against Laslo Djere when the Serbian retired and he totally outplayed Tomas Martin Etcheverry, winning 6-1, 6-0.
Because of these two dominant wins, and the fact that Tsitsipas won the tournament two times in the past, he may end up victorious, even though Zverev is very likely to take it at least into three sets.
Prediction: Stefanos Tsitsipas to win in three sets.
