Alexander Zverev has announced that he is set to return to competitive action on the tennis court in December as he is due to take part in the exhibition tournament, the Diriyah Tennis Cup in Saudi Arabia, followed by the World Tennis Cup in Dubai just over a week later.
Olympic champion Zverev was in the middle of a wonderful run at the French Open earlier this year, when he ruptured three ankle ligaments during his semi-final match against Rafael Nadal.
The double ATP Finals champion had planned to return to action at the end of November to represent Germany in the Davis Cup Finals. However, his comeback had to be postponed due to suffering a setback in his recovery.
But Zverev's brother, Mischa, has spoken positively of his younger brother's chances of competing in the Middle East over winter, used mainly to get some match time in preparation for the start of next season.
"He needs a few matches before the new season. So we registered for a few exhibition tournaments," Mischa Zverev said.
"We could train last week. We could even play a little longer on Monday. He is pain-free so far and feeling good," Mischa added.
Should the Middle East swing go well, then Zverev also plans to represent Germany in the inaugural United Cup at the start of next year.
The United Cup is a new, much-anticipated, mixed-gender tournament that will bring together the WTA and ATP since the popular Hopman Cup was cancelled after its final edition in 2019.
It will take place in Australia, across three cities, and is now the official season opener and curtain-raising event for the run-up to the Australian swing.
Before that though, if all goes well, Alexander Zverev fans look like they are going to get their first glimpse of the young talent since that terrible injury sustained back in June.
