Iga Swiatek ensured finishing the year as year-end No. 1 a long time ago, but now she also got the trophy for finishing the year as the top player on the WTA Tour.
After a very lengthy season, Swiatek last competed at the 2022 WTA Finals, where she unexpectedly lost to Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-final. Despite this, she came across as relieved.
The Polish player had a remarkable season, she managed to win 67 matches while losing only nine, and that yielded her eight trophies on the WTA Tour, becoming the first player to reach 11,000 points since Serena Williams.
On top of that, she won two out of four Grand Slams, winning the Roland Garros and the US Open, and of course, ended the season as the world no. 1, for which she received a trophy. Steve Simon, the CEO of the WTA, commented on giving the year-end no. 1 trophies.
"Iga and Katerina have enjoyed memorable seasons, and I am delighted to see them earn the WTA Year-End No.1 Rankings."
Swiatek wasn't the only player to finish the year as world no. 1. In doubles, Katerina Siniakova ended the season as the highest-ranked player, and Simon addressed also the Czech player.
"The Hologic WTA Tour this year has been more competitive than ever, featuring more than 50 tournaments across six continents, and Iga and Katerina deserve huge credit and recognition as they continue to redefine excellence in our sport."
Although it may seem impossible, mostly due to her incredible 37-match winning streak, Swiatek will want to replicate the 2022 season in 2023, and once again, end it with the year-end trophy in her hands.
If she will be able to do that remains to be seen, but the Pole is certainly the biggest favourite to do so.
