Alexander Zverev has been playing super solid tennis on clay recently, but he sees Carlos Alcaraz as one of the main favorites to win the Roland Garros.
Zverev has had a tremendous clay season so far, making the Madrid Open final and the Italian Open semi-final. In the final at the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid, Zverev got a chance to face Alcaraz, who proved too much for him.
The final was also marked by a controversy, as Zverev’s previous match finished very late, which didn’t give him a proper chance to recover in time for the final. Even so, the final wasn’t really close at all, and Alcaraz won.
What that final told Zverev is that the Spaniard can be quite tough to play on clay. He considers him among one of the favorites to win Roland Garros while singling out a few other names.
He mentioned Rafael Nadal, of course, even though he wasn’t aware that the Spaniard had picked up an injury in the meantime. He also mentioned Stefanos Tsitsipas, who bested him in the Italian Open semi-final.
He also mentioned himself as one of the players that could do really well in the French capital, but also stated Alcaraz as a player that will likely do a lot of damage at the event if he plays his best tennis. Finally, he mentioned Novak Djokovic as one of the favorites for the event as well.
"I didn't know that Rafa got injured. I'm sorry. That explains the third set a little bit. Yeah, I feel sorry for Rafa. Hopefully, he can be fit. He has 10 days' time to be able to play in Paris."
"Look, I think Alcaraz is one of the favorites. Novak is one of the favorites. Tsitsipas. If I get in form, I can do well there. There's a lot of guys that can play well on this surface."
