Alex de Minaur vs Stan Wawrinka: 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters - Preview & Prediction

by Zachary Wimer

Alex de Minaur is having a great season so far, but can he keep it going on clay and against an experienced veteran in Stan Wawrinka?

The Australian has played a really solid season so far, winning a trophy in Acapulco on top of just playing solid tennis. He seems to have taken the next step and looks every bit like a Top 10 player, which he hopes to become this year.

De Minaur hasn't played on clay in a long time, but he's going to do so at the Monte-Carlo Masters, where the draw gave him Wawrinka.

The Swiss player is a veteran who isn't playing his best tennis anymore but can still make the opponent's day miserable. He's had some decent performances this year, and Monte-Carlo is certainly a place he knows well. He's played well there in the past, so he can surely do it again.

Head-to-head:

Despite both being around for a while, they have never played against each other. One thing that will matter a lot for Wawrinka is how well he battles de Minaur's incredible speed on the tennis court.

He's quite quick around the court and has some weapons, making him a nightmare to play. The serve will be quite important as well because it could create rhythm in rallies, which he won't generally have. Basically, he'll have to be really good if he hopes to win.

Prediction

I don't think Wawrinka will have enough to win this match because de Minaur is just too good. He's been on this new level for a while, and I don't see Wawrinka being able to overcome that.

Prediction: Alex de Minaur to win in two sets.
