Carlos Alcaraz will start his 33rd week as ATP's No. 1, extending his lead over second-placed Novak Djokovic by 600 points, while Jannik Sinner rises two places to a new career-high mark.
Alcaraz made the quarterfinal this past week at the Canadian Open where he lost to American Tommy Paul in three sets. Still, he gained 170 points from that run, taking his total points tally to 9,395. Djokovic didn't play in Toronto, so he didn't add up any points to his current number of 8,795.
Nevertheless, Alcaraz is not certain to remain No. 1 until the US Open, with Djokovic expected to garner ranking points while in action in Cincinnati. Alcaraz would need to reach at least the Cincinnati Masters final to be sure of his spot. If Djokovic loses before the final, then Alcaraz will remain No. 1 irrespective of what he does in Ohio.
Moving on, the Top 6 has a different ring to it this week. Holger Rune makes his Top-5 debut, while Jannik Sinner's maiden Masters 1000 title in Canada ensures he soars to a career-high mark of World No. 6. Casper Ruud is the other big mover in the Top 10, dropping down two spots to No. 7 following his early exit in Toronto.
Rune, Sinner and Ruud are separated by less than 100 points between them, so expect plenty of momvement at the end of Cincinnati. Beaten Toronto finalist Alex de Minaur is on the cusp of a Top 10 breakthrough. By reaching two successive finals, the Australian man vaults to a new career-high ranking of No. 12.
One of the surprise packages in Canada was Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. By virtue of his stonking run to the semifinals, he rises 14 spots to a career high ranking too of World No. 23. Other notable mentions in the world's Top 100 include Mackenzie McDonald who vaults 16 spots to No. 42, while Japan's Taro Daniel re-enters the Top 100.
