The 2024 Vienna Open is one of the final two ATP 500 tournaments on this year's calendar, and the entry list has been unveiled.

First played in 1974, the 2024 edition of the event, running from October 21 to 27, will mark 50 years since its inception. Vitas Gerulaitis was the first man to win the Vienna Open, beating Andrew Pattison in the final.

The tournament has switched between an ATP 500 and 250 throughout its history, but impressive crowds, entry lists, and facilities have ensured that it has retained its 500 status since regaining it in 2015.

Roger Federer won his first ATP 500 title (known then as "ATP International") at the tournament in 2002 by overcoming Jiri Novak in four sets. Finals were best-of-five sets until that was changed in 2007.

Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Dominic Thiem, Juan Martin Del Potro, and David Ferrer are among the players who have won the title in Vienna, demonstrating the strong entry lists the event usually gets.

Jannik Sinner was last year's champion, triumphing in three sets against Medvedev in the final. However, the world No. 1 will not return to Austria to defend the title he worked hard to secure.

That decision proves Sinner's point about players not having to play at every tournament. He made those comments in response to some of his colleagues, such as Alcaraz, saying the schedule was too long.

Alexander Zverev is the No. 1 seed on the 2024 Vienna Open entry list. The German, who withdrew from the ongoing China Open, is another player who recently criticized the length of the calendar, saying the ATP does not care about player opinions.

Those views mean Zverev also withdrawing from the Vienna Open is not inconceivable, especially since he has already qualified for the ATP Finals. The tournament organizers will hope that does not happen.

Daniil Medvedev is set to return to the Vienna Open as the No. 2 seed after his run to the final last year. The 2021 US Open champion will hope to have found form after the Asian Swing since he looked out of sorts at the recent Laver Cup.

Medvedev is close to qualifying for the ATP Finals in Turin, and Taylor Fritz may have joined him by the time the 2024 Vienna Open starts. The US Open runner-up is currently fifth in the race but still needs some points to secure his spot in the final 8.

Three other players on the 2024 Vienna Open entry list have a realistic chance of qualifying for the ATP Finals. The first is Alex de Minaur, who currently occupies the final qualifying place.

Grigor Dimitrov and Tommy Paul are 10th and 11th in the race to Turin. Both men have ground to make up, but they could still pull it off with good results during the Asian swing and then in Vienna.

The 2024 Vienna Open will also mark the end of Dominic Thiem's outstanding career. Thiem, best known for winning the 2020 US Open, should get a great send-off from his home fans.
