2024 Stockholm Open ATP Entry List: Ruud, Dimitrov, Berrettini & More

The 2024 Stockholm Open is one of two events kicking off the European indoor hardcourt season, and the entry list has been unveiled.

One of two ATP Tour events held in Sweden (the other being the Bastad Open), it is one of the most prestigious ATP 250 tournaments on the calendar because of its long history.

The first edition of the Stockholm Open was held in 1969. Nikola Pilic, who used to coach Novak Djokovic, won the title that year by overcoming Ile Nastase in the final. It has been held every year since, except 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

John McEnroe, Boris Becker, Ivan Lendl, Goran Ivanisevic, Roger Federer, and Juan Martin Del Potro are among the high-profile players who have won the Stockholm Open, showing the esteem the tournament is held.

Gael Monfils was last year's champion. He overcame Pavel Kotov 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 in a thrilling final. Winning that title at age 37 and after all his injury issues was one of his best achievements on the ATP Tour in 2023.

However, Monfils is not on the entry list for the 2024 Stockholm Open, which will take place from October 14th to the 20th. The 38-year-old cannot defend his title in Sweden unless he asks for and receives a wild card from the tournament's organizers.

Casper Ruud, who recently said Novak Djokovic should be considered the greatest player ever, is the No. 1 seed on the entry list for the 2024 Stockholm Open. The 25-year-old's addition will undoubtedly boost ticket sales.

Indoor hardcourts do not suit Ruud's game well, but he is still capable of challenging for the title if he plays his best tennis. The Norwegian should also receive good crowd support during the tournament.

Grigor Dimitrov is the No. 2 seed for the 2024 Stockholm Open. The Bulgarian hopes to finish the season strongly and overcome the disappointment of retiring from his US Open quarterfinal against Frances Tiafoe.

Dimitrov generated attention by saying he felt double standards may exist in how doping cases are managed after Jannik Sinner's became public. Other players have also raised that concern.

Matteo Berrettini, 2022 Wimbledon runner-up, is another man on the 2024 Stockholm Open entry list. The Italian has strongly recovered from a long injury this year, although most of his recent successes have been on clay.

Some players on the entry list have surprised fans with their performances during 2024 and could be dark horses in Stockholm if they play their best tennis at the ATP 250 tournament.

Alexei Popyrin was one of the biggest success stories during the North American hardcourt season. The Australian had a stunning run to the title at the Canadian Open in Montreal before shocking Novak Djokovic in the third round of the US Open.

Brandon Nakashima's recent level has also been excellent. The American endured an awful 2023, but he is back near his best and is playing great tennis. He and Popyrin are opponents the other players will want to avoid if they continue to play near their recent levels.
