The 2024 European Open is one of the final ATP 250 events on the calendar, and the entry list has been unveiled.
Running from October 14th to 20th in Antwerp, Belgium, the European Open takes place during the first week of the indoor hardcourt season. The Stockholm and Almaty Open are the other ATP tournaments during that week.
The first edition of the European Open was held in 2016. Richard Gasquet, who recently became the third-oldest Challenger Tour champion, won the title during that year by overcoming Diego Schwartzman ever since.
It has become a feature of the ATP calendar since its inception. There has been a new winner every year, giving the event a reputation for being unpredictable. Andy Murray and Jannik Sinner have both won the tournament.
Alexander Bublik is the defending champion after beating Artur Fils in the final. However, neither of those players is on the entry list for the 2024 European Open, meaning a new winner is guaranteed.
It is unusual for the winner and the runner-up from the previous year to be missing from a tournament's entry list, although either man could still be awarded a wild card if they change their mind and decide to compete in Antwerp.
Stefanos Tsitsipas is the No. 1 seed at the 2024 European Open. He was also the top seed at the tournament last year. The Greek No. 1 reached the semifinals before losing to Fils 6-7, 6-7.
Observing Tsitsipas during the upcoming Asian Swing and European Open afterward will be fascinating because they are his first tournaments since he decided to split with his father, who had been his longtime coach.
Felix Auger-Alassime is the No. 2 seed at the European Open. The Canadian has fond memories of winning the 2022 iteration of the tournament. He is an excellent indoor hardcourt player, making him one of the favorites in Antwerp.
Jiri Lehecka is another entertaining player on the entry list. The Czech made headlines for splitting with his coach, Tomas Berdych. Lehecka recently returned from over three months out with an injury.
Several players could also be considered dark horses at the European Open. Tsitsipas' struggles this year, in particular, mean the tournament could be one of the most open ATP 250s of the season.
Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard is an opponent that all the other players in the draw will hope to avoid. The 21-year-old Frenchman possesses a huge serve, and most of his matches are decided by fine margins. His game is suited to indoor conditions.
Jakub Mensik is another talented young player on the 2024 European Open entry list. The 19-year-old is likely to be a future star on the ATP Tour, and his game is also very dangerous in indoor hardcourt conditions.
It promises to be a terrific 2024 European Open. The event is always well attended, and the fans generate superb atmospheres. Having so many quality players on the entry list will only increase attendance, enhancing the event even further.
