Tennis action returns to Hong Kong in the opening week of the new season for the first time in 21 years with a freshly reinstated ATP 250 tournament.
Running from January 1st to 7th, the Hong Kong Open will be a 32-player singles field comprised of four byes. Apart from exploring the culture in a cosmopolitan city, ATP players will vie to win a trophy and earn prize money and ranking points.
The draw for the event has been released, with top seed Adnrey Rublev expected to be the main star attraction. It is a very strong field, with the likes of Karen Khachanov, Frances Tiafoe, Francisco Cerundolo, Lorenzo Museeti, and Jan-Lennard Struff all seeded.
In terms of prize money, this year's purse stands at $661,585, which will be the standard for most ATP 250 events. However, the prize money distribution will vary for tournaments at this level. For instance, the champion in Hong Kong stands to make $100,000, which is marginally higher than in Brisbane.
The runner-up will be remunerated to the tune of $57,845, while each semifinalist will receive $34,000. Quarterfinalists stand to gain $20,000, while those who make the second round will bank $11,600.
Even the unlucky ones who fail to win a main draw match will be compensated for their efforts. The tournament is committing to reward them with a paycheck worth $7,200 for their time.
Points allocation begins from the second round stage until the final. The winner will pick the full 250. Because the ATP has recently instilled changes in points distribution in singles tournaments at the tour level, it will be reflected in most rounds before the final.
The runner-up gets 165, while a semifinalist will pick 100 points. Quarterfinalists will collect 50 points, while those who reach the second round will receive 25 points. Be sure to check the complete prize money breakdown and points distribution below.
