After two successful runs in 2020 and 2021, the Astana Open in Nur-Sultan officially joined the ATP Tour calendar this year again.
The tournament will be played as an ATP 500 event from October 3rd to October 9th in 2022. John Millman and Soonwoo Kwon won the Astana Open in Nur-Sultan while it was an ATP 250 tournament.
Because of the tournament's upgrade to an ATP 500 event, some of the best players in the world will make their way to Kazakhstan to compete at the Astana Open in 2022.
Daniil Medvedev, who is the 2021 US Open champion, and teenage phenom Carlos Alcaraz, lead the entry list for the tournament in 2022, and with the tournament's upgrade, the prize money awarded also significantly increased.
A total of $1,900,000 will be distributed to players at the 2022 Astana Open, with the champion taking the most significant part of that prize money, along with 500 points given to the winner. The prize money awarded to the champion equals to $355,310.
For comparison, in 2021, the winner at the Astana Open received 250 points and $47,080. That means this year's champion will get almost eight times more than last year's winner.
The losing finalist at the Astana Open will receive 300 points and $191,180, and semi-finalists will be awarded 180 points and $101,890. Those that will lose in the quarter-finals will receive 90 ATP ranking points and $52,060, which is more than the 2021 champion got.
Those that make it to the second round will go home with 45 ranking points and $27,785, while players that lose in the first round won't get any points, and they will also receive only $5,730 in prize money.
The major difference in the prize money distributed at the ATP 500 and 250 events is also one of the reasons why this year's tournament attracted many more big names.
