Iga Swiatek once again proved no-match for her competition at the WTA 250 event in her hometown Warsaw, the 2023 Poland Open.
After winning a Grand Slam title, a WTA 1000 title, and a WTA 500 tournament, the young Pole had a bit different career trajectory than most of her opponents, winning the WTA 250 tournament as the last one in her still young career.
But the win wasn't special just because it was her first WTA 250 title, but also because it was on home soil in front of the Warsaw crowd. Multiple times during the week, Swiatek admitted that it adds some extra pressure, but ultimately, she managed to win.
After the final, the world no. 1 in the WTA Rankings thanked her team and her family, but also admitted that she gave it her all to win in Poland. The final scoreline reflected that, as the 22-year-old won 6-0, 6-1.
"I want to thank my team and my family. It's not easy to play in Warsaw, but I'm so happy that we could manage and do everything we could today, after a pretty tiring day yesterday. I wanted to put it all in and go for it. I'm pretty happy that I did."
Despite allowing her opponent to win only one game in the final, the Polish player showed a lot of respect for Siegemund, who was able to win two difficult three-setters on the previous day, and simply ran out of gas against the favourite. The final loss was disappointing for the German, but Swiatek cheered her up.
"Laura, what you did yesterday was pretty surreal. I don't know if anyone would be able to survive that, but you did. Congratulations for this run, because it's been a pretty great week, and it's nice that we could play this final."
