Iga Swiatek had to play her best tennis to keep The Kites alive in their tie against The Eagles at the 2022 World Tennis League, and she did, beating Caroline Garcia in two sets.
Nick Kyrgios and Bianca Andreescu started with an important win for The Eagles in the opening mixed doubles match of the first tie at the 2022 World Tennis League in Dubai.
The duo defeated Holger Rune and Eugenie Bouchard. They did that quite convincingly, winning the match 6-2, 6-3, which meant they gave their team a 12-5 lead in the tie, as games count as points at this exhibition event.
However, the World No. 1 player in the WTA Rankings, Iga Swiatek, showed why she should be the leading player of her team when she took on Caroline Garcia in the women's singles match of this tie.
The French player is a champion of the recent WTA Finals, but in the group stage, she lost to the Pole. The outcome was the same in Dubai. as Swiatek dominated their match from start to finish.
The Polish player had the majority of the break points in the first set and broke her opponent two times. She was also broken once, but her two breaks were enough for a comfortable 6-3 win.
Since every game counts at the 2022 World Tennis League in Dubai, Swiatek had to aim for the fastest win possible. And she succeeded in doing that, as she broke her opponent's serve early in the second set.
Although Swiatek then couldn't add another break to increase her advantage, she kept her lead throughout the match and, after an hour and 7 minutes, won 6-3, 6-4.
The Eagles still lead The Kites 19-17, and the tie will be decided in the men's singles match. Nick Kyrgios and Felix Auger-Aliassime will battle it out for the win.
