The 2022 World Tennis League started in Dubai, and it started in the best way possible for The Eagles. Nick Kyrgios and Bianca Andreescu won the opening mixed doubles match.
In the opening tie, The Eagles met The Kites, and it started with a mixed doubles match. Kyrgios teamed up with Andreescu, and they took on Holger Rune and Eugenie Bouchard.
For both teams, it was their first mixed doubles match as a pair, and none of the players are known for playing mixed doubles. Therefore, neither of the teams had any advantage on the court.
However, Kyrgios is the 2022 Australian Open doubles champion, and he has a great serve, which is useful in doubles. His team was, therefore, slightly favored to win, and they managed to back it up on the court.
In the first set, it was The Eagles who faced the first three break points. But they succeeded on all three occasions and got a chance to break The Kites in the next game.
Kyrgios and Andreescu broke their opponents' serve, and shortly after, they added another break. Thanks to those two breaks and almost perfect serving, the duo was able to win the first set 6-2 in only 27 minutes of play.
The second set was a bit closer. This time, however, Rune and Bouchard didn't have any chances to break their opponents. On the other hand, The Eagles had two break points, and after using one of them, they won the second set 6-3 to secure the first very important win for the team.
The Eagles won the match 6-2, 6-3, and since games count at the World Tennis League, they secured a 12-5 lead over The Kites.
Next, Iga Swiatek will play against Caroline Garcia in the women's singles match, and Nick Kyrgios will return to the court as he's set to take on Felix Auger-Aliassime in the men's singles match.
