Svitolina Says Russian Athletes Should Be Barred From Competing At Olympics

Elina Svitolina has explained why she thinks it is not right for Russian athletes to be allowed at the 2024 Olympics.

The Olympics always produces huge drama that leaves fans on the edge of their sets. Tennis is no exception to this, with Alexander Zverev the current Olympic champion after winning the gold medal in 2021.

There is one player who is under the most pressure at the Olympics. A gold medal is the only thing missing from Novak Djokovic's illustrious career, which is why he is prioritizing the Olympics this season.

It is also possible that fans could witness some retirements at the Games this year. Mats Wilander believes that Andy Murray could retire at the Olympics due to his success of winning two gold medals in the past.

The event has also had to face the controversial topic of whether Russian athletes should be allowed to compete due to Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine. It has been decided that these athletes can compete but not under the Russian flag.

Ukrainian sporting hero Svitolina does not think this goes far enough. Speaking to Time, Svitolina outlined why she believes that Russian athletes should be banned completely from the Olympics.

“The behavior of Russia has been against what the Olympics and the Olympic movement is about, and this alone should exclude them from the Games. How is it fair that they compete when they have put Ukrainian Olympic athletes at a huge disadvantage? Our athletes have been going to the front, to protect us and our way of life rather than train and prepare for the Olympics.”

This is a very divisive topic. Some agree with Svitolina that Russia's actions against Ukraine mean a complete ban is necessary, others think the athletes should not be punished, while others think only Russian athletes who have opposed their country's actions should be allowed to play.

It is certainly understandable that Svitolina feels strongly about this topic and her achievements continue to inspire and give hope to many Ukrainians.
