McEnroe Hints At Federer Becoming New Laver Cup Captain

The Laver Cup has taken place every year since 2017, but there will be a very noticeable change after this year's iteration of the event.

There is always a unique feeling around the Laver Cup. Although the number of top players who have elected to play at the tournament has differed greatly by year, it is always fun viewing for tennis fans, regardless.

However, the 2022 Laver Cup will always be the most memorable edition. That was the scene of Roger Federer's extremely emotional retirement from the sport, with the 20-time Grand Slam champion and Rafael Nadal both in tears.

The Swiss Maestro has stayed very involved with the competition. In fact, Federer has said he wants to be a Laver Cup captain. The thought of the eight-time Wimbledon champion in that role is certainly a tantalizing one.

There have also been reports in the past about the possibility of Andre Agassi becoming a Laver Cup captain. That has now become even more likely after the news shared by the official website of the Laver Cup about Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe.

According to the comment made by McEnroe, this year's event, being held at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin from September 20-22, will be the last time Borg and McEnroe serve as captains of Team Europe and Team World, respectively.

"We've had some epic Laver Cup battles over the years. With this being our final year, both Bjorn and I will be putting out all the stops to get the victory."

It will certainly be strange not to have the two former rivals on the sidelines after they have become so synonymous with the tournament.

Hopefully, the duo will be given a fitting farewell with the best Laver Cup yet. Team Europe is looking to do far better than last year's comprehensive loss in Vancouver.

This seems to be a small slip of the tongue from the former American player, as no official news was confirmed by the tournament organizers, but it seems that Roger Federer and Andre Agassi may take over as team captains in 2025.
