Svitolina Happy After WTA's Statement Eliminates Booing For No Handshakes

Elina Svitolina was happy about the fact that the WTA released a statement that helped with the booing of the fans.

Booing seems to be one of the biggest issues and most discussed topics on the WTA Tour right now. It comes in relation to a lack of handshakes after matches between Ukrainian and Russian and Belarusian players.

One of those incidents happened recently at Wimbledon, when Ukrainian Elina Svitolina took on Belarusian Victoria Azarenka. However, a few weeks later, when the two were set to meet again, the WTA assured Svitolina that a statement would be released.

In fact, there was no handshake after the match, but also no issues, as the American crowd seemed to respect the decision and cheered for both players after they finished their match at the 2023 Citi Open in Washington.

After her campaign in DC, Svitolina made her way to Montreal, where she's set to compete at the 2023 Canadian Open. Ahead of the tournament, she was asked about the announcement, saying that she was happy with how the match ended.

"I don't know if they were consulting, but from my side Steve spoke to me prior to the match that there would be an announcement about that. As I said earlier, I mentioned after Wimbledon, the match with Vika, maybe there should be announcement, and then WTA reacted and came up with this, so this is good. I think everything went good. I think there was no booing for either of us."

After the most recent experience, Svitolina is happy that the decision of Ukrainian players is respected, and also, that the WTA supports them by releasing those statements during the matches.

"Yeah, I think you can see in some ways, but I don't know. I think it's the right decision to do. I'm happy that our decision is being respected, and this is the most important for us."
