Sofia Kenin isn't having a very good year, but she's determined to change that at the Charleston Open, where she'll take on fellow American Taylor Townsend.

It's been a very strange season for Kenin, who actually played really well at the warm-up exhibition events in the Middle East. Once the WTA season started, however, the American wasn’t able to follow up. She's played nine matches so far this year and lost eight of them.

The only match she won was against Greetje Minnen on January 9th. Since then, she has lost all her matches, which means that she will enter this event with a 7-match losing streak. What's even worse is that she hasn't won a set since Doha, meaning she's been without a set for well over a month. That's not good news, but she's hoping to change that in Charleston.

Townsend is a good player and certainly won't be easy, but she's also a player Kenin can beat. Let's see if she'll be able to.

Head-to-head:

Kenin and Townsend have played in the past, but most of those matches happened years ago and were not on the WTA Tour. Their most recent match happened at Wimbledon last year, and Kenin was able to win that match in two sets.

That was at a time when the American was actually playing pretty decent tennis, as she bested Coco Gauff after that win over Townsend. Things look very different right now, but I think the American can still get it done.

Sofia Kenin Taylor Townsend

58 Rank 72
25 Age 27
1-7 2024 W/L 10-7
262-174 Career W/L 270-160

Prediction:

Kenin has generally been pretty good against Townsend in the past. I just feel like this bad stretch has to end somewhere, and why not in Charleston, which is a unique event in many ways.

Prediction: Sofia Kenin to win in three sets.
