Simona Halep won’t be continuing her good form from the Canadian Open at the Cincinnati Open because she withdrew from the WTA 1000 event due to an injury.
Halep has had a solid year so far with a couple of really solid results. Especially lately, the Romanian has been able to find the type of form that has eluded her for much of this year.
She had a great run at the Wimbledon Championships, which could have been even better, but overall, it was an outing that she’ll fondly remember in the coming months. Losing in the semi-final of a Grand Slam to a player who went on to win the trophy isn’t the worst result in the world.
Her good play and form lately didn’t go in vain totally, as her form carried over to the Canadian Open, where she was able to play some really solid tennis and go all the way to lift the trophy.
It’s the second trophy Halep was able to win this year after winning a tournament in Melbourne earlier this year by beating Veronika Kudermetova. Unfortunately, fans in Cincinnati won’t get to see Halep play much more at the WTA 1000 event.
She barely survived her first-round matchup against Anastasia Potapova. However, she won't follow up on that win as she withdrew ahead of her second-round match against Veronika Kudermetova.
According to the reports, it’s an injury but not any kind of serious injury. The thigh is a problem, and it’s her not wanting to risk anything with the US Open so close.
After the long week in Canada, the Romanian player will rest up and prepare well for the US Open. Overall, it was likely a wise decision because there is very little reason for Halep to push herself through a minor thigh injury, which could result in an even bigger injury.
