Serena Williams lost in the first round of the 2022 Wimbledon to Harmony Tan in a dramatic three-set match.
Fans on the Centre Court couldn't complain about not getting their money worth on Tuesday night as Serena Williams and Harmony Tan battled for more than three hours and played three sets in the first round of the 2022 Wimbledon.
Before the third Grand Slam of the season, Serena Williams played two doubles matches in Eastbourne alongside Ons Jabeur, winning on both occasions. But in the All England Club, it was her first singles match since last year's Wimbledon.
It was obvious that the experienced American needed a bit of time to get going as she lost the first two games of the match. However, soon she found herself leading 4-2 and 40-15 in the first set and it appeared that it might be an easy first-round victory for her.
Yet, things got interesting in the first set. Harmony Tan broke the 23-time Grand Slam champion's service game in the seventh game and added one more break later in the set to win it 7-5. After the first set, players needed to wait a few minutes, as the roof on the Centre Court needed to be closed.
And the break really helped the American. After getting an important break in the second game, she was unstoppable in the second set and won it 6-1. 7-time Wimbledon champion started well also in the third set and quickly led 3-1.
But then, her opponent won 12 out of the following 16 points and it was Harmony Tan who was leading the match, 4-3. At the end, Serena Williams got as close as two points from winning the match, but eventually she lost in the super tie-break of the third set 7-10.
