Emma Raducanu is certain to drop out of the top 100 of the WTA Rankings following her withdrawal from the Madrid Open.
The former US Open champion's position within the top 100 was already in doubt when she was handed a challenging draw ahead of the 2023 Madrid Open. Ultimately, the British player would have needed a run to at least the fourth round to prevent a tumble down the rankings.
But, the 20-year-old player officially withdrew from the clay court event due to a right-hand injury and will not be able to produce the points required to stay within the top 100. The rising British star would have entered the competition ranked number 85 in the world rankings.
Raducanu was scheduled to play Viktoriya Tomova in the first round before her eventual withdrawal. However, her omission from the WTA 1000 event marks yet another disappointment for the 20-year-old player.
A troubling start to 2023 set the tone for Raducanu after she crashed out of the Australian Open in the second round by losing in straight sets against Coco Gauff. The Brit appeared to rediscover some form with a run to the round of 16 at Indian Wells, where she eventually lost to world number one Iga Swiatek.
But, more difficulties have affected Raducanu in recent weeks after she crashed out in the opening stages of the Miami Open and then the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. The 20-year-old also missed out on the team GB Billie Jean Cup squad earlier in April.
In addition, the Brit could require a wildcard entry for her home tournament in Wimbledon in June if she cannot make up the points to climb back into the WTA's top 100. But if Raducanu cannot recover quickly for clay season and work on improving her consistency, then more setbacks could occur for the promising player.
