Emma Raducanu recently hired her former childhood coach as her full-time coach, which finally concluded her long-time search for one.
As Raducanu was recovering from her triple surgery, many tennis pundits talked about her coaching situation. It was a bit messy after the US Open win, as she tried several coaches in a very short period of time and never really settled on one.
Many explained that it's vital for her to find a coach who will be with her for a while, urging her to make a wise decision. She took a long time to finally decide and ultimately hired her former childhood coach, Nick Cavaday, who has known her for most of her life.
We can't say that the result would be another major, yet, but she's played fairly well recently on clay, so things are certainly trending in the right direction. After her most recent win in Stuttgart at the 2024 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, Raducanu shed light on the current coaching situation.
"Yeah, I feel very comfortable working with him. I have known him since I was a young age, so he's someone who I feel like I can trust, and that's a big thing for me, I think. Just having people who I know before, I would say, I got famous or I got any of the big, you know, whatever coming my way, it was just good to have someone who's known me before that."
"So you know that their intentions are good, and they didn't just come and, you know, after the win and when everything is easy to just come and join."
The wording of Raducanu's speech was rather interesting and might indicate what problems she had with other coaches in the past. She's a tremendous athlete who needs stability to take the next step, and the coach that knows her well may provide exactly that.
