World No. 5 Jessica Pegula and the defending champion Ons Jabeur have signed up to play the 2024 Charleston Open in South Carolina.
The Charleston Open is synonymous with being the oldest all-women's tennis tournament in the United States, having been a staple on the WTA calendar since its inception in 1973 (except 2020 due to COVID-19), the same year the women's governing body was formed.
A host of the world's greatest tennis players on the WTA tour have played and won this tournament in the past, such as Chris Evert (eight-time champion), Martina Navratilova, Tracy Austin, Steffi Graf, Martina Hingis, and Serena Williams.
In 2022, the tournament commemorated its 50th year of staging the event at Daniel Island by unveiling its renovated Credit One Stadium, which offered significant upgrades in seating options and enhanced hospitality experiences.
This WTA 500 event is the only clay court tournament played on North American soil. Tunisia's Ons Jabeur won this year's tournament without losing a set. Jabeur won a rematch of the 2022 final in which she exacted revenge on Belinda Bencic to lift her second career title on clay.
With its proud heritage of welcoming some of the world's top tennis stars, next year will not be any different. The 2024 edition is scheduled to run from March 30 to April 7 and will herald the start of the clay swing on the WTA tour.
Jabeur will be joined by USA's No. 2 woman, Jessica Pegula, who has made nine previous trips to Charleston in her career, with her best result coming in 2023 when she lost to Bencic in the semis. The Swiss player is also slated to return, but having recently announced her pregnancy, she will likely withdraw.
Other early entrants include World No. 9 Maria Sakkari and two other former champions, Madison Keys and Sloane Stephens.
