Naomi Osaka ridiculed rumors about her and American rapper Cordae breaking up in a post on social media.
The Japanese star has been attempting to focus on her first tournament since the French Open at the Silicon Valley Classic. She missed Wimbledon and the grass-court season with an injury.
Osaka is also adjusting to life without Wim Fissette, her coach, for over two years. Under the Belgian coach's guidance, Osaka won the 2020 US Open and the 2021 Australian Open.
However, after a difficult season so far, Osaka elected to split from Fissette. She insisted the parting was amicable, calling Fissette a cool guy, but said she wanted to work with her father again.
The four-time Grand Slam champion won her first match since that decision against Qinwen Zheng at the Silicon Valley Classic, although she needed three sets to get over the line against the talented young Chinese player.
Unfortunately, many social media accounts were not focused on Osaka's victory. Instead, there were posts about the 26-year-old breaking up with Cordade, leading to Osaka shutting down those rumors.
"People really just believe anything and run with whatever lol."
Although Osaka did not directly address the rumor in her post, she was clearly referring to it. The brief but pointed post was enough for the former US Open champion to make her feelings about the issue evident.
Fake rumors are probably not what Osaka needs right now. She has spoken openly and bravely about her mental health struggles. People creating stories about her relationship ending after splitting with her longtime coach is not ideal.
Osaka will need to be fully focused on her upcoming match against Coco Gauff at the Silicon Valley Classic. It is a blockbuster matchup that is sure to attract a big crowd. Hopefully, it will live up to the hype and produce quality tennis.
