Iga Swiatek's mysterious notebook has always attracted the attention of TV viewers, but she was able to clarify what is actually contained in the notebook and what she writes in it.
This week the notebook has made its comeback at the Canadian Open, most notably in matches against Karolina Muchova and Danielle Collins where Swiatek won both outings in three sets. It's not the first time that Swiatek has been seen peeping on the pages or scrolling down some notes.
Back at the 2022 French Open, Swiatek was seen carrying a notebook after a bathroom break between sets 1 and 2 during her win over Qinwen Zheng. At the time there wasn't too much fuss about it, but reporters were curious to ask the Pole this week, after noticing it develop into a ritual.
Swiatek threw some light on her idiosyncrasy and said it's 'nothing special', but it acts as a way of living the present moment in matches and reprise on the good she did in the first set of the match. She adds that it also alleviates any thoughts that run through her mind.
"Well, just kind of remind myself the key things that I focused on when I went on court, you know, to kind of keep the same things that worked before the second set and to keep doing that, but nothing special. It's just like during the match many thoughts can come, and I always want to kind of start the same way if I won a set."
Swiatek's win over Collins cements her spot as the world's top-ranked player for the remainder of the US swing including the final major of the season in New York. She will play American Jessica Pegula in a marquee semifinal on Saturday afternoon.
Asked to say a couple of things about her next opponent, Swiatek was well aware of the magnitude of the task but did not disclose her tactics for that match.
"Well, Jesse, we faced each other plenty of times. She's really consistent and one of the best players for the last couple of seasons. It's not going to be easy for sure, but yeah, I'm not going to tell you the tactics. So I'll just say that I'll give my best, and I hope it's going to be a nice match."
