Coco Gauff is a former doubles number one on the WTA Tour, but the American said that she wouldn't be playing doubles much in the future.
Coco Gauff has been a decent doubles player from the moment she started playing tennis. She partnered with good friend Caty McNally earlier in her career, while recently, she's been playing with Jessica Pegula as they generally play the same singles event and have the chance to play often as a result.
The duo have won big trophies together but are yet to win a Grand Slam together, which is a goal. The upcoming US Open could be the place to do so, as they're on the hunt to become the number-one pairing in the world. Gauff was doubles number one, but even so, she doesn't plan on playing doubles a lot in the future.
I mean, I'm sure as I get way older, yeah, it won't be as much of a priority. Even now we're playing less doubles, Jess and I, I think than we did last year. We're just trying to pick out our tournaments a lot better. The ranking in doubles isn't a priority. It just kind of happens when you do well, so it's not something that I'm thinking about.
It doesn't mean that she will stop playing doubles abruptly, but it certainly means that she's only going to play some of the bigger events, and that will decrease even further in the future. As she explained further, playing doubles at slams is likely something that is going to remain a constant.
I do see myself playing in the slams the majority of the times in doubles. Probably not every slam, but maybe US Open, and that slam I think is the one that I would prefer to play as much as possible.
It's a question she doesn't have a definitive answer to yet because she likes playing with Pegula and they're really good. It's a tough thing to walk away from.
