Coco Gauff is in the driving seat to return to the doubles world No. 1 ranking as she and partner Jessica Pegula continue on their Australian Open run with an appearance in the quarter-finals.
In August last year, the 18-year-old became the second-youngest player in history to earn the world no.1 doubles spot when she won the National Bank Open in Toronto.
Ahead of the first Grand Slam of the year in Melbourne, Katerina Siniakova was top of the doubles rankings on 6915 points with playing partner and compatriot Barbora Krejcikova in second place.
However, the number one seeds won the 2022 edition of the Australian Open, meaning they have maximum points to defend.
That means that Gauff currently leads in the WTA live rankings on 5690 points with the potential to finish on 7260 if her and Pegula win the doubles event.
The American duo - who are the number two seeds - are set to face Japan's Miyu Kato and Aldila Sutjiadi next with a potential winner take showdown in the final against Siniakova and Krejcikova still a distinct possibility.
If they win that match, Gauff moves on to 6040 points and another big step towards that much-coveted No.1 ranking.
Veronika Kudermetova, who sits second in the live placings, is out of the running as her and playing partner Ludmilla Samsonova were beaten by Storm Sanders and Elise Mertens in the first-round on the John Cain Arena, losing 6-1 in the deciding set.
