Marketa Vondrousova vs Coco Gauff: 2023 Canadian Open Montreal - Preview & Prediction

| by Evita Mueller

Coco Gauff is on a winning streak right now but so is Marketa Vondrousova as one of those streaks will end later following their Canadian Open round two clash.

Gauff has been playing amazing tennis recently which she proved by winning her biggest trophy yet at the Citi Open in Washington recently. It was a spectacular run, one that is continuing in Montreal and she'll put her 5-match winning streak on a line against Marketa Vondrousova.

The Czech player is a fellow Top-10 ranked player who has a winning streak of her own. Her's is a 9-match winning streak dating back to Wimbledon where she won her maiden Grand Slam trophy. Her first match was equally impressive as that of Gauff as she bested Caroline Wozniacki in three sets.

Head-to-head:

The head-to-head between these players is 1-0 for Gauff as the American won their previous match. It happened back in 2021 in Dubai on hard courts. The final score in that one was 3-6 6-0 6-4 and it looks a lot like what I think might happen here as well.

Prediction:

Gauff is playing really well right now because she's confident and more importantly comfortable with her forehand. While there is a need to improve it, the American is not shying away from using it which makes her a very tricky player to beat.

Vondrousova has counters to that of course; her own precise game from the baseline as well as amazing touch that allows her to defend well against attacks. One thing that Gauff has over the Czech player is quickness and that could be a huge benefit in any longer rallies.

Vondrousova is prone to missing at times and if Gauff covers the court well she could force plenty of misses from her opponent. She'll need to serve well and minimize her own unforced errors though.

Prediction: Coco Gauff to win in three sets.
