This year's Wimbledon Wimbledon Championships have been dealt a blow after the powerful and watchable Madison Keys was forced to withdraw with an injury.
Due to her playing style, the 2017 US Open finalist is a major threat on grass. She possesses a huge serve and flat groundstrokes that can blow her opponents away when she finds her range.
Keys' suitability to grass makes her results at SW19 somewhat surprising. The 27-year-old has not reached the quarterfinal since 2015, and it is the only Grand Slam where she has not made a semifinal appearance.
However, her performances on grass outside Wimbledon have been more impressive. Examples include winning the 2014 Eastbourne International and 2016 Birmingham Classic titles.
Keys's run to the title at the Eastbourne International in 2014 means shee has happy memories at the venue. Unfortunately, her experience this year was not as joyous, and it caused her to withdraw from Wimbledon.
The American retired from her Round of 16 match in Eastbourne against Jelena Ostapenko after losing the first set 3-6. This was due to an abdominal injury, with Keys undoubtedly hoping she would be fit for Wimbledon by being cautious.
Sadly, the injury is more severe than Keys feared. As a result, she announced her withdrawal from Wimbledon, saying she had to prioritize her health.
"This isn’t what I was hoping to say a few days before Wimbledon, but unfortunately I have to withdraw due to an abdominal injury. I’m so disappointed, but my health comes first and my body needs time to get back to 100%. Lots of love London fans. See you next year."— Madison Keys
Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka also withdrew from Wimbledon. With Osaka and Keys both out of the tournament, the tournament organizers will be even more relieved to have Serena Williams playing at the event this year.
