Leylah Fernandez's first tournament since returning from an injury at the Canadian Open will include playing doubles alongside her younger sister, Bianca Jolie Fernandez.
It has been over two months since Leylah competed on the WTA Tour. She missed the entire grass-court injury because of a severe injury sustained during her run at the French Open.
Last year's US Open runner-up played excellently at Roland-Garros in the opening four rounds, beating Belinda Bencic and Amanda Anisimova. Reaching the final seemed possible at that stage.
Sadly, the 21-year-old fractured her foot during the quarterfinal in Paris against Martina Trevisan. Fernandez bravely finished the match and miraculously took it to a third set but ultimately came up short.
After a frustrating time on the sidelines, including missing an exhibition event with Coco Gauff, Fernandez is ready to compete on home soil at the Canadian Open, and she will not just be playing in the singles.
Fernandez has entered the doubles with her younger sister, Bianca. Many may not have been aware that the French Open quarterfinalist had a younger sibling because Bianca is much lower in the rankings.
However, playing alongside her more experienced and accomplished sister should be an excellent experience for Bianca. She will undoubtedly learn a lot, which she can use at the events she is used to playing at.
Leylah and Bianca will play Kirsten Flipkens and Sara Sorribes Tormo in the first round of the Canadian Open. They start as the underdogs against their more experienced opponents, but a home crowd could inspire them.
There have been many examples of siblings playing doubles together. For example, Andy Murray and his brother Jamie have played in the Olympics, and several crucial Davis Cup ties together.
Observing Leylah and Bianca's progress at the Canadian Open will be fascinating. Their chemistry as siblings could lead to them causing some upsets.
