Kenin Equals Her Biggest Doubles Career Title At Miami Open Amid Singles Struggles

Sofia Kenin might not be able to win singles matches this year, but she has won a lot of doubles matches at the 2024 Miami Open and will leave the event with the trophy.

Kenin played a few matches this year in singles and won only one of them. In fact, she's winless in singles since January 9th, 2024, which is remarkable considering that she's a really great player and isn't dealing with an injury right now.

She proved that at the WTA 1000 event in Miami, not in singles, but in doubles. She did more than fine by making the final and then winning the final as an underdog.

Kenin teamed up with Bethanie Mattek-Sands, with whom she used to play doubles a few years ago. They reunited this year, forming a pretty formidable double pairing that has now won two trophies in 2024 alone.

They first played together at the Abu Dhabi Open and went all the way. Then they played in Indian Wells but lost to Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula early. But the Miami Open gave them another opportunity, and they won a few matches, making the final, where Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe awaited.

Many consider that pairing to be the best in the world even though they're not ranked as the best. They're still ranked as one of the best, occupying 4th and 5th in the doubles ranking.

It didn't matter because the Americans produced a sensational effort to stun them in three sets. Kenin and her partner were underdogs but were able to complete a stunning comeback.

They lost the first set 4-6 but then won the second set in the tie-break, 7-6(5). The final set was, of course, a match tiebreak, which they won 11-9. It was a pretty close match, but when the match was on the line, the Americans stepped up. Kenin will now be ranked as world number 43 in doubles.
