Jessica Pegula Signs Up For Her First Grass-Court Tournament Of 2024

Jessica Pegula is set to make an unfamiliar stop at this year's grass-court swing, which will begin immediately after the 2024 Roland Garros.

Pegula, who turned 30 last month, is currently nursing an undisclosed injury she picked up while practicing on clay and had to pull out from the Madrid Open.

The American opted to remain at home and complete the recovery process before joining her peers for the remainder of the clay swing. Pegula has signed up to play in Strasbourg, which has been upgraded to the 500 level this year and will be the top seed.

It is expected she will also feature in Rome before going to France ahead of a busy schedule. After the clay-court season ends on June 9th, Pegula will begin preparations for Wimbledon by making her second trip to the Libema Open, which begins on June 10th.

Last year, the World No. 5 was knocked out in the quarterfinal stage at SW19 by eventual champion Marketa Vondrousova. Pegula hasn't scaled the last eight hurdles at Grand Slams, with that streak now stretching to six times.

She hopes to break that barrier either at Roland Garros or Wimbledon in the next two months. To do so on grass, she has signed up to play in 's-Hertogenbosch.

Pegula will join Elise Mertens in the only WTA tour-level tournament held in the Netherlands. She will be targeting her first professional title on grass. Last year, Russia's Ekaterina Alexandrova was crowned champion.

The Buffalo native is 14-6 for the season and has endured a roller-coaster year because of injuries. Pegula also made the surprise decision to split with longtime coach David Witt.

After an underwhelming start working with two new coaches, Mark Knowles and Mark Merklein, her results have improved in her last two tournaments.

She reached the Miami quarterfinals and Charleston semifinals. Her last match was at the Billie Jean King Cup, where she helped the USA ease past Belgium in a qualifying tie to reach the November Finals.
