Coco Gauff will play in her maiden Grand Slam singles final at Roland Garros in 2022 after defeating Martina Trevisan in the semi-final of the tournament.
Gauff has had a fantastic week in Paris, where she has yet to drop a set at the 2022 Roland Garros and will play in her first Grand Slam singles final after beating Trevisan in two sets.
She will face the WTA World No. 1, Iga Swiatek, in the final match. Following her semi-final win, the young American player admitted she was shocked, struggling to process what she achieved.
"I think I'm a little bit in shock right now. I didn't know how to react after the match… For me it's a little bit difficult because when I play players like her you have to be more patient."
"Being American, I grew up hitting hard and sometimes I had to remind myself this is not the one to attack. Martina, I played her two years ago and lost to her so I knew how difficult she is to play, especially on clay."
Gauff knows who her final opponent will be. Swiatek is undoubtedly the best player in the world at the moment, and beating her in the final of a clay-court Grand Slam might be too big of an ask.
"I think I'm in a mindset now, like, it doesn't matter. I'm going to be happy regardless (of what happens in the final). My parents are going to love me regardless. I'm just going to go into it as another match."
At the same time, Gauff showed her maturity already in her teenage age, reminding the importance of global issues compared to a tennis match.
"Yeah it's a Grand Slam final but there are so many things going on in the world now, especially in the US, a lot of things going on right now, so I think it's not important to stress over a tennis match."
