Simona Halep appeared on the entry list for the 2023 US Open despite being provisionally suspended, and the ITIA has now addressed the situation with a statement.
Halep's last professional tennis tournament was the 2022 US Open. She lost in the first round of the event to Daria Snigur, 2-6, 6-0, 4-6, but that loss wasn't the worst memory she brought home from New York.
At the same event, the Romanian player tested positive for a banned substance. As a result, she was provisionally suspended from competing. Obviously, Halep has appealed that decision, providing evidence of accidental contamination.
However, the hearing was pushed back multiple times, leaving both the player and her fans extremely frustrated. The hearing should come to an end in the foreseeable future, which is why some of the fans got excited when they saw Halep's name on the US Open entry list.
Although her name on the list has an asterisk that acknowledges her as a suspended player, it's the first event in almost a year that features Halep's name. That caused confusion among some fans, prompting the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) to release a statement, as reported by Antena 3 CNN, revealing that no decision has been made yet.
"Good morning. I promise you that no decision has been made available to anyone yet. In the US Open player field, it is clearly marked as provisionally suspended, and therefore, if she remains suspended, she will be withdrawn. If not, she can compete."
Halep has used this time to work on her game, posting pictures of herself on the tennis courts. However, with the resolution of her case still yet to come, the Romanian can only hope to return to the Tour as soon as possible.
She is not the youngest anymore, which might make it challenging for her to return to her best again. She finally played some of her best tennis before her suspension, but that reset all of Halep's progress.
