'I'm Sorry I Had To Win': Kenin To French Crowd After Upsetting Home Favorite

Sofia Kenin produced a huge upset by beating native player Caroline Garcia at the 2024 Roland Garros, after which she apologized to the fans.

The American has been playing far below her level this year. Her record before this win was 5-13, which is better than it was a few weeks ago but still way below her potential. She is a former Grand Slam champion and a former finalist at the major in Paris.

She played in the final when Iga Swiatek won her first major a few years ago. Injuries prevented her from playing at that same level since then, but she's still out there trying to get back to her peak level.

Another thing to remember is that she played against a very solid native player who, at her peak, was ranked in the Top 10. Beating Garcia wasn't easy, but she did it, triumphing 6-3, 6-3, and after the match, she apologized to the fans for beating their compatriot.

"You know, [Caroline Garcia's] such a tough player, and I'm sorry that I had to win. But, thank you guys for supporting and I really enjoyed the atmosphere today."

Kenin also noted her affinity for playing well on the Court Philippe-Chatrier because that's where they played their match under the closed roof, and she once again delivered really good tennis.

It reminded her of the run she had a few years ago when she made the final at the clay-court Grand Slam, and she would certainly want to repeat that.

"Yeah, I absolutely love this court. I feel like I have some kind of connection here and, yeah, I really enjoy it every time I step out of the court and I feel like I'm playing some great tennis and, you know, the hard work is paying off. So, I'm very happy."
