Iga Swiatek might not be the World No. 1 player on the WTA Tour anymore, but the Polish player began her 100th week in the Top 10 on Monday.
It's been a bumpy ride for Iga Swiatek this year, as she hasn't won as many trophies as she did last year. She managed to win Roland Garros, but her season hasn't been anywhere near the almost-perfect season she put together last year.
As a result, the Polish player lost her World No. 1 rank, as she had plenty of points to defend. That, and some players like Aryna Sabalenka really stepping up, simply proved too much for Swiatek, who is still ranked inside the Top 10, with this week marking her 100th week inside the Top 10.
Most of that time, obviously, Swiatek spent as the No. 1 player, which is impressive, but it also signals how quickly she rose to the No. 1 rank. It was a relatively smooth process for her last year after Ashleigh Barty's retirement.
Since then, Swiatek has largely held that spot, losing it recently at the US Open, despite remaining in the Top 10 and likely to stay there by year-end.
However,
Swiatek is determined to battle for the World No. 1 spot in the upcoming weeks, as she doesn't have that many points to defend. She has already touched down early in Asia ahead of the swing in that part of the world.
The conditions should suit Swiatek in Asia, even though she hasn't played a lot during this swing. It's because the Pole is one of the younger players on the WTA Tour, and in recent years, the tournaments in Asia were absent from the calendar because of the changes made due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
