Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula won't be playing doubles together after contesting a very demanding clash in singles at the 2023 Canadian Open in Montreal.

The doubles pairing was supposed to pull double duty today but they won't as they withdrew from their doubles match. Gauff and Pegula already were together on the court but it was for their singles match, a quarter-final that sent Jessica Pegula into the semi-finals.

It was a tough match for both players. We had very windy conditions and it almost lasted three hours. Pegula won the opening set comfortably but lost the second one rallying to win in three sets. Speaking after the match, she was very happy with her win but admitted that she wasn't sure what was going to happen with the doubles.

I think we’re supposed to play doubles in a few hours. We’ll see how we feel bc that was a really tough match. It’s always tough playing your doubles partner. We know each other’s games so well. It just came down to the wire at the end

Pegula after beating Gauff

Many had a suspicion that the duo will likely opt out of the doubles for multiple reasons as they did in the past. One major one was to give Pegula enough recovery time for the semi-final while Gauff will be looking to cool down after showing visible frustration during the match.

The suspicions proved thorough as the duo pulled out about one hour after the singles match ended. Their opponents, Ena Shibahara and Shuko Aoyama, advance to the semi-finals with a walkover. When it comes to Pegula and Gauff, they're going separate ways for a few days.

Gauff is likely to travel early to Cincinnati to prepare for that event while Pegula will hope to continue her solid level with a chance to contest for the trophy. She narrowly missed out on that at the Citi Open.
