Coco Gauff and
Jessica Pegula won't be playing doubles together after contesting a very demanding clash in singles at the
Canadian Open in
Montreal.
The doubles pairing was scheduled to appear on the courts twice in one day, but they withdrew from their doubles match. Gauff and Pegula were together on the court already once today, but it was for their singles match.
It was a quarter-final meeting in Montreal, which Pegula won, reaching the semi-finals at the WTA 1000 event. It was a tough match for both players. The match was significantly impacted by very windy conditions, and it lasted almost three hours.
Pegula won the opening set comfortably but lost the second one, later rallying to win in three sets. Speaking after the match, she was delighted with her win but admitted that she wasn't sure whether they would play their doubles match.
"I think we’re supposed to play doubles in a few hours. We’ll see how we feel bc that was a really tough match. It’s always tough playing your doubles partner. We know each other’s games so well. It just came down to the wire at the end."
Many had a suspicion that the duo would likely opt out of the doubles for multiple reasons,
as they did in the past. One major reason was to give Pegula enough recovery time for the semi-final, while Gauff will be looking to cool down after showing visible frustration during the match.
The suspicions proved thorough as the duo pulled out about one hour after the singles match ended. As a result, their opponents, Ena Shibahara and Shuko Aoyama, advance to the semi-finals with a walkover. When it comes to Pegula and Gauff, they will be going their separate ways for a few days.
Gauff is likely to travel early to Cincinnati to prepare for the WTA 1000 event there, while Pegula will hope to continue her solid level with a chance to contest for the trophy in Canada. She narrowly missed out on that at the Citi Open in Washington.
