Gauff Misses Out On Doubles Top 10 Return Despite Roland Garros Title

by Zachary Wimer

Coco Gauff hasn't played much doubles this year, which is why her ranking dropped, and even with the triumph at the 2024 Roland Garros, she will not return to the Top 10.

The young American is a very good doubles player who used to play more doubles in the past than she did this year. Part of why is her conscious decision to play fewer doubles and focus on singles, but part of that is also Jessica Pegula's injury.

Because of that, Gauff initially planned to skip over the Roland Garros doubles' tournament, but ultimately, she partnered up with Katerina Siniakova to play at the season's only clay-court Grand Slam.

They proved a formidable team, advancing all the way to the final, where they bested Italians Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani. The triumph is worth a lot of points, 2000 of them, which added 1220 to Gauff's total tally because she defended a good chink from last year's run.

The points improved her ranking, which on Monday will be 12 in the world, just shy of the mark needed to return to the Top 10. The American will have a total of 4520 points, while the joint-ninth duo, Ellen Perez and Nicole Melichar have 4735 points.

Still, it's not something that will concern Gauff too much because she peaked at number one in doubles already, so whether she is ranked in the Top 10 or not likely doesn't matter to her anymore, especially since she wants to play fewer doubles tournaments.

She's certainly not going to keep playing doubles regularly in the future, though she will very likely return to Paris for doubles at the Olympics together with Pegula.

In that sense, this run was a nice practice run for Gauff even though she wasn't playing with her usual partner. Her doubles partner, Siniakova, will also improve her ranking, jumping seven spots to number 4 overall.

She, too, will be in Paris for the Olympic Games, joining forces with her former doubles partner, Barbora Krejcikova.
