Coco Gauff was able to reach her third consecutive major semi-final, beating Ons Jabeur at the 2024 Roland Garros.
It was a quarter-final of the French Open, meaning that the winner would be in the semi-final, likely against no other than the biggest favorite of the tournament - Iga Swiatek. Still, that's just one step away from the final, and two great players were going head-to-head in what was a fascinating battle.
The opening set was very close because both players had no issues with their serve at the start. Jabeur applied heavy pressure towards the end of the set, resulting in a break of her opponent's serve.
She was playing her peak tennis, hitting incredible winners, slices, and drop shots for the whole duration of the set, winning it 6-4. However, Gauff flipped the script in the second set completely as she played a good set of tennis.
She didn't have as many unforced errors as she had in the previous set, which was hugely important. That precision put the Tunisian under a lot of pressure, and she couldn't hold, getting easily beaten 6-2 in that second set.
The next set continued to feature very erratic play from Jabeur. She wasn't serving well and was missing the court all over, which isn't that unusual. Once the momentum really flipped and the American found her rhythm, her opponent never looked the same.
She hasn't had a very good year overall, so this run is positive for her. Obviously, Gauff has been on a tear so far, and this match is yet another testament that she's truly among those who could win the event.
Comeback wins like this one certainly should boost her confidence, as the final score of the match was 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 for the Gauff who is once more in a major semi-final, third in a row after the 2023 US Open and the 2024 Australian Open.
