Gauff Extends Winning Streak To 7 Matches With Crushing Win At Wuhan Open

Coco Gauff recorded yet another impressive win, this time starting her 2024 Wuhan Open campaign to extend her winning streak.

The American player came to Wuhan after a short turnaround from Beijing, where she won her second WTA 1000 title of her tennis career. Gauff won the China Open after beating Karolina Muchova in the final, and having to move so quickly to another WTA 1000 tournament is something she has not experienced before.

However, coming to Wuhan with a new trophy in her cabinet certainly helped her recover a little bit quicker, but that didn't mean that Gauff would come to the city full of expectations to win another title.

Only recently has she stated that she has been treating this week as an early pre-season, and given her recent results, that approach seems to be working really well for her.

Even ahead of the Wuhan Open, the 20-year-old American admitted that she treated the China Open like a practice week and wanted to do the same in Wuhan.

"I'm just taking it day by day. Last week was treating it like practice. I think even more so now just because it was, like, two long weeks in Beijing. Here it's a quick turnaround. Only hit once today. I play tomorrow."

"Yeah, I think it's just handling the conditions. The result right now, whether it's good or bad, it is what it is. I think these are the weeks on tour that you kind of just treat as like practice."

If what she showed in her first match against Viktoriya Tomova was a practice performance, then her opponent might start to be scared, as the fourth seed completely dominated her opponent.

The American was the first player to be broken in the match, and it happened immediately in the first games of the first set, but she quickly recovered and won six consecutive games in the first set to win it 6-1.

She hit two aces, won 83% of points after her first serve, and converted three out of four break chances that she got. It was almost a flawless performance from the recent China Open champion, and she had no plans of stopping.

In the second set, Gauff added four more consecutive games won to those six from the first set, increasing her total of consecutive games won to 10. At the time, she was already up 6-1 and 4-0.

Tomova was then able to hold her serve for the remainder of the match, but that didn't mean anything, given her opponent's massive lead. Gauff easily won the match 6-1, 6-2 to record her seventh consecutive victory.

In the third round of the Wuhan Open, she will play against the 13th-seeded Marta Kostyuk, who made it to the third round after her second-round opponent, Amanda Anisimova withdrew from the tournament.
