Coco Gauff might have suffered greatly in the French capital not long ago, but she’s doing much better in the German capital.
Gauff had a pretty upsetting conclusion to her Roland Garros experience as she was beaten in both the singles and doubles finals. She didn’t take too long to shake off those losses, though, as her focus now is fully on the grass season and the upcoming Wimbledon Championships.
It was at Wimbledon, after all, that Gauff announced herself to the world by beating none other than tennis legend Venus Williams. Fast forward a couple of years to now and she’s still doing really good on the surface.
Currently, the American player is in Berlin, competing at the Berlin Open, and she played against Xinyu Wang and bested her very comfortably. The opening set set the tone for the match quickly as Gauff dominated her opponent to win it 6-0.
It was a one-woman show in the first set as Gauff didn't allow her opponent to get anywhere close to winning a game when she lost only 3 points on her serve in the set, and on return, she converted all three break points she had, which resulted in a swift 6-0 win in 20 minutes.
Wang is a streaky player, and that showed in the first set of this match, as she couldn't find any sort of rhythm. Gauff is masterful at using that to her advantage as her speed simply makes the court smaller, with the angles becoming sharper, and very few players can hit those.
The second set was a bit more complicated. Gauff didn’t start off well, allowing her opponent to take a 4-2 lead, but after doing that, she was able to battle back and not only pull the break back but actually take the lead as well.
The final score ended up being 6-0, 6-4 as Gauff hopes to keep it going. Her next opponent is the fourth seed at the event, Karolina Pliskova, who is a very tough matchup and won’t be easy to beat.
