Caroline Garcia has spoken bravely and candidly about her issues with overeating in comments that might help others suffering from a similar problem.

Garcia enjoyed the best season of her career in 2022. She won the Poland Open, including a stunning win against Iga Swiatek, Bad Homburg Open, and Cincinnati Open before reaching a maiden Grand Slam semifinal at the US Open.

However, Garcia's best moment came at the end of the year when she won the biggest title of her career at the WTA Finals. The 29-year-old achieved that despite her coach, Bertrand Perret, leaving a few days before the event began.

That outstanding 2022 season came after challenging years in 2020 and 2021. Garcia did not play with the same confidence and made repeated unforced errors during matches.

The Frenchwoman has now revealed that she used to struggle with an eating disorder and spoke in detail about how it impacted her.

“Everyone is different. Some will stop eating and for me it was the opposite: I used to take refuge in food. You feel so empty, so sad, that you need to fill yourself. It came from the distress of not managing to do what I wanted to do on court, of not winning anymore, of suffering physically.“
"Eating would appease me for a few minutes. We all know it does not last but it was an escape route. When you’re alone, it’s harder to control. In tennis, you spend a lot of time alone in your room. It’s how it often happened.”
"When it happens, I accept it better and feel less guilty. Allowing myself some regular indulgences helps me avoid having too many of these cravings. I was too tough on myself at some point. I’m the type of person who weigh themselves to the gram. Now, if I’ve been wanting pizza for two days, I’m going to have the pizza.”
