After reaching her career-high second place in the WTA Rankings last year, Anett Kontaveit is dropping lower and lower every week in 2023.
The Estonian had a perfect end to the 2021 season when she won titles in Moscow and Cluj and even reached a final at the WTA Finals. She lost that match 3-6, 5-7 to Garbine Muguruza, but it was still a great success for Kontaveit.
She then started the 2022 season really well by reaching the semi-finals in Sydney and winning in St. Petersburg before reaching another final at the Qatar Open in Doha.
Following her success, Kontaveit climbed to the World No. 2 spot in the WTA Rankings, and she was in the Top 10 for almost one full year, as she entered it on October 31, 2022, and dropped out on October 23rd, the next year.
The drop came after the 27-year-old player couldn't defend her points at the WTA Finals, but after a disappointing end of the season, Kontaveit faced an even more significant challenge in 2023 as she needed to defend points from St. Petersburg and Doha. But that won't happen.
Kontaveit started the season with only two wins and four losses, and she was even forced to retire from her second-round match at the 2023 Abu Dhabi Open due to an injury.
The injury will also prevent her from competing in Doha and Dubai as she withdrew from those events, and that means that she won't add any points in the upcoming weeks.
However, she will drop quite a lot of points, as she will see her current 1,909 points go down to 910, and she will surely leave the Top 50 in three weeks' time.
That is a brutal development for the Estonian player, who will go from the peak of her tennis career to struggling to qualify for some tournaments based on her ranking.
