Karolina Pliskova won’t play at the Madrid Open this year due to a knee injury that she suffered at the WTA 500 event in Stuttgart.

Pliskova has been enjoying a solid season so far, with a lot of really good performances. None of them amounted to a trophy yet, but her season has ben a fair bit more consistent than what she usually produces.

She reached a quarter-final in Melbourne, followed by a quarter-final in Dubai were solid outings for the Czech player who is trying to find that consistency that allowed her to make the Wimbledon final a couple of years ago, among other achievements.

With the season turning to clay, there was hope that Pliskova could possibly up her level even more as she’s always been a strong clay player, and she opted to start the clay season in Stuttgart like so many others do.

It’s an indoor clay event, so it’s a bit easier to ease into that part of the season. Plus, a chance to win a great car doesn’t hurt either. It was going well for Pliskova with a strong win over Maria Sakkari and then another one over Donna Vekic, but then she faced Iga Swiatek.

She actually won the first set but then lost the next two pretty easily, and part of why she lost that easily is because she had picked up a knee injury that prevented her from playing her best tennis.

That knee injury is the reason why she will miss the Madrid Open as well, which is a shame because Madrid is where she once played in the semi-final, so it’s an event she can do really well at.

More recently, her results in the Spanish capital have been a bit less impressive, but with her current form, she might have been able to have a good run. Either way, she won’t be in Madrid because of the knee injury, with a possible return scheduled for the Italian Open in Rome, which starts on May 9th.

According to the Czech player's statement, it doesn’t seem like the injury is all too significant, which is very good news.

"So sorry I have to announce my withdrawal from the Madrid Open. During my last match in Stuttgart, I injured my knee. I will try my best to be ready for Rome. Thank you for your support. See you soon on the court."
