Simona Halep can now breathe a huge sigh of relief after the Court of Arbitration for Sport issued its verdict on her doping appeal.
The Romanian star challenged the initial ruling from an independent tribunal that she had consumed the banned substance Roxadustat, which is considered a blood doping agent. This was determined after random in-competition testing at the 2022 US Open.
Halep was placed on provisional suspension for precisely a year before the ITIA published the verdict that she had breached the anti-doping regulations and was, therefore, going to be banned from the sport for four years.
The decision shocked the tennis world, and Halep vowed to fight for justice to clear her name. She maintained her stance that she had never taken any illegal substances to play the sport. Details of the prohibited supplement were later confirmed to be a contaminated collagen.
Halep's former coach, Patrick Mouratogolou, felt responsible for the ordeal as he was the one who recommended the collagen powder to the former World No. 1. The tennis world did not spare him.
After submitting her appeal, which was heard in February this year, Halep also sued the Canadian company Quantum Nutrition, which manufactured the supplement, for damages in excess of $10 million.
On Tuesday, the CAS decision was positive news for Halep. Her four-year doping ban was overturned and reduced to nine months, with the suspension period backdated to begin in September 2022, the date of her first test.
That means Halep has fully served the nine-month suspension and is free to return to action immediately. She shared a lengthy post on Instagram upon receiving this news, detailing the challenging period she had lived through, and thanked all those who played a role in proving her innocence and ais already looking to return to the tour.
