Iga Swiatek won the 2022 Roland Garros, extending her winning streak to 35 matches and matching the one from Venus Williams.
By getting to 35 consecutive wins, the Polish player also passed Serena Williams, who had an impressive winning streak in 2013 when she won 34 matches in a row.
Speaking after her win at the 2022 French Open, Swiatek spoke about her incredible winning streak, saying how special it was to surpass anything that Serena Williams managed to do in her incredibly successful tennis career.
"Having that 35th (consecutive) win and kind of doing something more than Serena did, it's something special. Because I always wanted to… have some kind of a record. In tennis it's pretty hard after Serena's career."
"So basically that really hit me. Obviously winning a Grand Slam too, but this one was pretty special because I felt like I've done something that nobody ever done, and maybe it's going to be even more."
Swiatek's winning streak was a constant talking point in her interviews, press conferences, match coverages, and any other coverage related to her matches in Paris.
She definitely was aware of it and could feel the pressure mounting, which is why she was also proud of her dealing with that pressure during the Roland Garros, and ultimately ending it with the trophy in her hands.
"I felt the baggage. The hardest thing is like not letting yourself think about that and overanalyse and not letting yourself think about all the numbers."
"I have been doing that for a few months now, and for sure, two weeks here were harder, also because (the media) keep reminding me about all this stuff. But it's part of the work and I'm getting better and better at it, and that's also something that I'm proud of."
During the grass-court part of the season, keeping the streak might be a bit more difficult for Swiatek, as that's her weakest surface.
