Simona Halep's former coach, Darren Cahill, heaped a lot of praise on the Romanian player. He called her "an extraordinary person."
Cahill and Halep worked together for six years. The two have ended their collaboration in 2021. They have achieved many great things together, as Halep won two Grand Slams under the Australian coach and spent time as the WTA World No. 1 player.
Since then, Cahill has moved on to coach Jannik Sinner, but he still holds Halep in high regard. He was one of the first to come out in her support following her suspension.
According to Cahill, there was no chance Halep was cheating. During a recent interview, as per Relevant Tennis, Cahill recalled her maniacal approach to taking any supplement or any meal in order to avoid testing positive for something, even by chance.
"With Simona Halep, I lived the best moments of my career, and I had my greatest joy. She is an extraordinary person; sometimes, she was her own worst enemy. At that time, she had a lot of pressure on her back as her country, Romania, expected to see her as no. 1.
Halep has been away from the sport since the 2022 US Open. That's when she tested positive for a banned substance. Since then, the Romanian has started a battle to clear her name, and Cahill has been one of her most vocal supporters.
Some of the latest rumors suggested that Halep could identify how the banned substance entered her body and was hoping to return to tennis sooner rather than later.
As for Cahill, he's working with Jannik Sinner, trying to lead him to the top. The Italian player has been on a tear recently and looks very comfortable heading into the clay season, during which he will certainly have things to say.
